Walk MS San Diego

Last weekend, the team at San Diego BioMed came together to show our support for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at a local sponsored walk – WalkMS. These organizations emphasize a meaningful expression of the support system that is critical to the everyday lives of those with MS.

Multiple Sclerosis is an immune-mediated neurological disease involving both immune T, B, and innate immune cells. Together these cells promote inflammation, which damages the myelin sheath surrounding and protecting nerve fibres in the central nervous system (CNS). Without myelin, the nerves are unable to efficiently conduct electrical currents that translate into messages to distant sites of the body. Common symptoms of MS are numbness on hands and feet, blurred vision, impaired muscular coordination, severe fatigue, and a large spectrum of neurocognitive disorders. It is estimated that there are 2.3 million people with MS worldwide.

San Diego BioMed has aligned goals with WalkMS as we are partnered with The Multiple Sclerosis Medical Research Center (MSMRC). MSMRC is a center for excellence at San Diego BioMed. Our scientists attend regular MSMRC meetings to identify new information related to MS care and research, discuss and agree to the priority hypotheses and approaches, present and discuss data from ongoing experiments, and design the presentation of projects for dissemination to the scientific and community population.

We are also happy to announce we doubled our donation goal to fuel the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s mission to cure MS while empowering people affected by MS to live their best lives. No one has to face MS alone!
