National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

One of many areas of research that San Diego BioMed scientists are working on is obesity and the complications that come along with it. Obesity impacts over 70 million adults and 14.4 million children in the US alone. During this years’ National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, SDBRI wants to highlight the serious health complications that can impact children who are obese and what we are doing to give these patients a fighting chance.

Over the last two decades, Dr. Fahumiya Samad has been working on understanding how obesity increases the risk for developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Her group has identified a number of blood clotting proteins, inflammatory proteins, and signaling pathways that are dysregulated in obese body fat tissue which contribute to the development of complications such as type 2 diabetes. Dr. Samad’s findings can lead to therapies that can help children who suffer from obesity and its complications.
