Dr. Cecilia Marcondes’ new publication investigates what pieces of HIV are required to activate inflammatory genes

At SDBRI, we study the neurological consequences and complications existing in individuals who are infected with HIV and abuse drugs. The recent publication by Dr. Cecilia Marcondes’ group investigates what pieces of HIV are required to activate inflammatory genes. Each orange and yellow dot in the picture above shows a different gene that is involved in this process and the lines show which genes interact with each other. In people who are infected with HIV and are also drug abusers, the number of genes involved in inflammation increases making the response much more complicated and treatment of the inflammation more difficult to achieve.
